Why MGM Resorts Imposes Vaccination Obligation on Employees

The mandate was announced Monday in a letter to employees of MGM Resorts CEO Bill Hornbuckle. MGM has about 57,000 employees nationwide and says it plans to hire several thousand additional employees. 

In a statement, Hornbuckle said they are investigating to further expand the vaccine mandate to other positions and hourly employees. A large part of the workforce works hourly under a collective labor agreement and cannot therefore be obliged to be vaccinated. 

MGM spokesman Brian Ahern said talks should be held with unions. The goal of MGM is that as many people as possible are vaccinated. Hence, the company is exploring various ways to expand MGM resorts imposes vaccination obligation requirements among their workforce.

MGM Resorts is Nevada’s largest private employer with 10 gaming properties and several other properties on the Strip. Now only 46 percent of Nevada residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Nevada ranks 32nd in the nation for the percentage of the total population that is fully vaccinated.

Earlier this month, Hornbuckle encouraged all MGM Resorts employees to get vaccinated. The number of infections started rising again in Nevada, imposing a face mask requirement on all casino staff and customers, regardless of vaccination status. This rule was imposed by the Gaming Control Board. Face masks are now mandatory for both employees and customers of Nevada casinos.

New Mandate

Under the new mandate of MGM Resorts Imposes Vaccination Obligation, all salaried MGM Resorts employees who do not work exclusively from home must be vaccinated by Oct. 15. All new employees, who do not work exclusively from home, must provide proof of vaccination before they can start work, effective August 30.

Hornbuckle realizes that many do not find this a pleasant development. He says they did not take this decision lightly. He said that since MGM Resorts is one of the largest and most trusted operators in the world, it is their duty to fight against the further spread of the virus. This move comes as White House officials have focused on boosting vaccination efforts in four key sectors: large corporations, small businesses, health care providers and colleges. Since the beginning of the month, more than a dozen major US companies, including Walmart, Google and United Airlines, have announced vaccine mandates for some or all of their employees.

Steve Sisolak said at a press conference that he is grateful to MGM Resorts for implementing the new policy. He hopes more companies will require their staff to be vaccinated. He says it is the best way to keep everyone safe and that this is the only way to eradicate the virus.
